Data Breach Affecting M&S and Co-op Customers

Data Breach Affecting M&S and Co-op Customers

What's Happened?

Two linked cyberattacks have targeted major UK retailers Marks & Spencer (M&S) and Co-op, with both companies confirming that customer data has been compromised by hackers.

Be Alert for Fraud Attempts

WARNING: Fraudsters are likely to exploit this breach by impersonating M&S and Co-op in fake communications.

Be suspicious of any unexpected:

  • Phone calls claiming to be from M&S or Co-op
  • Emails requesting personal information
  • Text messages asking you to click links or verify details
  • Requests for passwords, PINs, or banking information
  • Remember: Legitimate companies will NEVER ask for sensitive information via unsolicited contact.

Protect Yourself Now - Take These Steps:

  • Alert Your Financial Providers
    • Contact your bank, mortgage provider, and credit card companies
    • Inform them of the potential data breach
  • Secure Your Online Accounts
    • Change passwords on all accounts containing sensitive information
    • Use strong, unique passwords for each account
    • Visit Get Safe Online for advice on your passwords and password management.
  • Monitor Your Finances
    • Check bank statements and credit card bills carefully
    • Review your credit report for unauthorised activity
    • Report any suspicious transactions immediately to your bank on 159
  • Consider Protective Registration
    • Apply for CIFAS protective registration which will inform you if anyone is applying for a loan using your details. There is a small fee for this service.
    • This adds extra security checks when someone tries to open financial products in your name
  • Stay Vigilant
    • Be extra cautious of phishing attempts over the coming weeks
    • When in doubt, contact companies directly using official numbers from their websites
  • If You Think You've Been Targeted:

  • Don't panic - act quickly but calmly
  • Report it to your bank 159 and the police at Action Fraud: 0300 123 2040 or online
  • Keep records of any suspicious communications
  • Remember:

Criminals often exploit data breaches even without access to your actual data - they use news of the breach as a hook to trick you.

Stay alert, stay safe, and share this information with vulnerable friends and family members.
