SCAM ALERT - WINTER FUEL ALLOWANCE

A winter fuel allowance scam text is circulating with fraudulent messages claiming to offer a "Winter cold weather allowance" or a similar scheme.

The text shown  was sent to PCSO Ali Donnison, who was a bit put out as she is not old enough to qualify for winter fuel allowance!

These texts often include a link to a fake website that resembles the official government site, designed to steal personal information or bank details. The messages may state recipients are eligible for a payment and must act quickly to claim it, urging them to click a link and provide personal information or even a small payment.

Key points to remember about this scam:

No application is needed for the Winter Fuel Payment for most people: If you are eligible and received a payment last year, you will be paid automatically.

Be wary of unsolicited messages: Don't trust messages that ask for personal details, especially if they are unsolicited.

Verify the sender: If you are unsure about a message, contact the relevant organization directly through their official website or phone number.

Report suspicious messages: Report scam texts by forwarding them to 7726.

Don't click on suspicious links: Avoid clicking links in unsolicited messages, as they may lead to phishing websites.

Beware of requests for payments: Do not provide any payment details in response to these scam texts.

If you have already responded to a scam message or provided your details, contact your bank immediately and report the incident to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
