Bogus Police Officer Scam Telephone Call

Alert message sent 04/03/2020 15:39:00

Information sent on behalf of Dorset Alert

A Sherborne resident has received a telephone call from a scammer claiming to be a Police Officer. The bogus Police Officer claimed to have a cloned bank card in the victim’s name.

Typically, the scammer will try to gain the victim’s trust by claiming to be calling form a police station and giving them a fictitious ‘badge number’. Finally, they will ask for the victim’s bank card details to ‘verify the details match’ on the cloned card they say they have.

Thankfully, due to the victims’ vigilance on this occasion, no money was stolen, and after hanging up they reported the matter to Dorset Police.
